Encapsulated in a warp of time and space,
to hold mystical powers over future days.
Does history lie in the hands of the winner?
a depiction of truth or an extension of reality,
twirled and twisted like licorice?
Some might say it’s the biggest scam
unsympathetic to the ones who succumbed
and predisposed to the holders of the pen.
Carefully selected vestiges of that once was
to fit agendas that now are!!
If history lies in the hands of the winner,
then it will be perceived in the eyes of the beholder.

Pallavi, sometimes the loser can get out a better story. In the US, to perpetuate the awful Jim Crow laws, the Southern narrative after the Civil War was to paint the cause for the rebellion as a matters of states’ rights not the economic reason of slavery. Sadly, it worked too well and the KKK and like-minded folks rose from the ashes to extend the war on equal rights for 100 more years.
I wrote a post recently about people trying to whitewash the unpleasant parts of history. We cannot allow that to happen. We must not let that happen no matter how embarrassing it is to the country or people who committed such atrocity. UK and US imperialism get white washed, eg as some means to justify controlling another country (and its resources).
The sad lesson that remains unlearned by too many, is if we do not understand history, we are destined to repeat it. And, those who try to whitewash it are doing us no favors.
Great post, Keith

Indeed! Said it accurately. Reporting of history is very critical and I wish it’s done in its purest form. I look forward to reading your post.

You should check out Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History podcast! In his King of Kings episodes he covers the history of the Persian empire from multiple perspectives and discusses the role of historians in winnowing out fact from fiction.

Somehow I missed this – link must not have worked. You are so right – history is often retold with bias. So well written.

Thought inducing. Thankfully these days, it’s so hard to hide attrocities and human rights violations.
